An active trader working from home needed several charting and news windows up at once. The obvious buy is a high-end gaming machine, and it’s the wrong machine. Those are built to render 3D at high frame rates, which a trading platform never asks for. It wants cores, display outputs, silence, and the certainty that nothing stops working at ten in the morning.
He didn’t want to choose components. He wanted to sit down and trade.
Every decision was a failure mode removed
The interesting calls here were not about benchmarks. They were about what breaks, and what happens to a trading day when it does.
Air cooling, not liquid. A pump is a moving part, and on a machine that runs every trading day a moving part is a future outage. The cooler chosen is near-silent and carries a ten-year warranty.
The graphics card was deliberately under-specified. Trading platforms barely touch it, so it was sized purely to drive four display outputs and the money went into CPU cores, where the actual bottleneck lives. That is the opposite of what most builders would have sold him.
The power supply runs at half load by design. Peak draw is around 450W into an 850W supply: maximum efficiency, and the fan never spins up.
Two drives. Trading records and journals live off the OS drive, so rebuilding Windows never puts them at risk. Windows Pro rather than Home, for disk encryption on those records and remote access from a phone.
The specification refused substitutions
The spec carried an explicit list of things that could not be swapped: no liquid cooler, no house-brand power supply, no Windows Home, no tall memory that would foul the cooler. That list exists because those are exactly the decisions that get quietly downgraded when something is out of stock on a Friday afternoon. Here it was enforced by building the machine rather than ordering it — which is the only reason every decision above survived into the finished desk.
Eleven days from first message to sign-off. He has kept hiring me since.
Specified, sourced, built and installed by one person. That is the whole reason the decisions held.
